Yes, indeed, I’ve embarked on the journey of learning Spanish at the age of 66. I consider it paramount to be able to communicate in the language of the land I call home. Reflecting on it, I believe two decades ago, grasping the language would have been far more effortless. However, in the present, the challenge lies primarily in retaining what I’ve learned.
In my junior high years, I undertook Spanish classes, yet sadly, the adage ‘use it or lose it’ rang true. By the time I reached 15 in Seattle, the Spanish I acquired in 9th grade had slipped away. Back then, the necessity of learning another language didn’t seem apparent, except for those venturing abroad or studying in foreign lands. Life took its course, and it wasn’t until my forties that my yearning for exploration truly ignited.
I now engage in Spanish lessons twice a week, each session lasting 45 minutes, under the guidance of a delightful young woman from Oaxaca named Allyn. Her kindness and patience perfectly complement my learning journey, which begins anew. Embracing the fundamentals doesn’t daunt me; rather, it’s the diligent study and retention of what I absorb that I must master. My aspiration is to converse with the Mexican community in my locality, knowing well that perfection isn’t the goal but sincere effort. While many Mexicans are fluent in English, my desire is to communicate in Spanish. With each passing class, I anticipate an enhancement in my conversational abilities.
In Mazatlan, Mexico, a vibrant tapestry of cultures and experiences unfolds daily. While some may come for brief sojourns, flitting in and out every six months, I’ve chosen a different path – one of deep immersion. Living here year-round, I’ve recognized the value of truly connecting with the heartbeat of this enchanting locale. It’s not merely about getting by; it’s about delving into the soul of the community, embracing its language, its rhythm, and its people. For me, living my best life means wholeheartedly immersing myself in Mazatlan, Mexico.
