Upon learning about our impending move to Mazatlan for retirement, I immediately embarked on a quest to uncover potential writing opportunities, drawing upon my blogging experience from my previous role at a boutique in Seattle. At 65, I had no intention of idly sitting by and embracing aging. This proactive approach mirrored my actions when we relocated to Thailand, where I eagerly sought out volunteer opportunities, such as visual merchandising for a local shop near our apartment. Engaging with the community in meaningful ways has always been important to me. Serendipitously, my search led me to MazatlanLife, an online magazine catering to the foreign community since 2011. Edited by Sheila Madsen, the publication offers content in both English and Spanish, making it a vital resource for expatriates like myself.
Taking the initiative, I reached out to Sheila Madsen, expressing my interest in contributing as a writer for MazatlanLife.
The affirmation to embark on Shop Talk has opened a door to a realm perfectly tailored to my passions. For those familiar with me, it’s no surprise that this venture resonates deeply with my interests. Engaging with new individuals, delving into their narratives, and exploring local establishments is akin to stepping into my natural element. The sheer joy derived from this endeavor is immeasurable; having already completed three stories and with two more awaiting publication, the journey has been immensely fulfilling. Each encounter with local Mexican shop owners has been a testament to their graciousness and linguistic prowess, graciously accommodating my limited Spanish proficiency. Immersed in the art of storytelling, I find myself enamored with both the writing process and the diverse array of individuals I encounter along the way. This endeavor has seamlessly woven me into the fabric of the community, fulfilling a deep-seated desire for connection and belonging. Unlike transient expats who oscillate between Mazatlan and their home countries, I’ve chosen to plant roots here year-round, fostering meaningful relationships, primarily with Canadians who share a similar lifestyle.
The synergy between Sheila and myself within Shop Talk is truly a blessing. Our mutual respect and genuine fondness for each other have blossomed into delightful experiences, both professionally and personally. Sharing moments with Sheila and her husband, Soren, has been nothing short of delightful, adding depth to our connection. Sheila’s extensive knowledge and vast network within Mazatlan have been invaluable, enriching my understanding of the community. Their journey, having lived here for 15 years after transitioning from an ad agency background, parallels ours in many ways, fostering a sense of camaraderie. The fact that our husbands also share a rapport is an added bonus, as harmonious relationships between couples aren’t always guaranteed. In this serendipitous alignment of stars, writing for MazatlanLife has become an even more fulfilling endeavor, thanks to the wonderful bonds formed along the way.
